Hon’ble PM announced India’s pledge to phase out SUPs by 2022 during World Environment Day (June 05, 2018). He further pitched for freedom for India from SUP in his 2019 Independence Day speech.

MoEF&CC vide amendment to PWM Rules dated August 12, 2021 has prohibited Manufacture, Import, Stocking, Distribution, Sale & Use of following items w.e.f 01.07.2022

Plastic Sticks: Ear buds. Balloons, candy, ice-cream Cutlery items: Plates, cups , glasses, forks, spoons, knives, trays Packaging / wrapping films: Sweet box, invitation cards, cigarette packets Other items : Plastic flags, PVC banners < 100 µm, polystyrene for decoration Minimum Specified thickness of carry bags: 75 Micron w.e.f  September 2021 & 120 micron w.e.f  December 2022 Above Provisions not applicable to Compostable plastics [ Rule4( b) (3) ]

Note: PWM Rules 2016 prohibit Plastic sheets < 50 micron & Plastic packaging for tobacco product.
